What to do when you get to an address
Walk it with a light.
A county live trap is a wire box about the size of a milk crate, usually set against a fence, under a porch, or beside a shed. In the dark the eyes catch a flashlight before anything else does. Call the name and stop to listen, because a cat shut in one will normally answer you.
Knock and ask.
Most people who set a trap are dealing with raccoons and have no idea a cat could be in it. “Have you got a trap out back? My cat’s missing” is usually the whole conversation. Leave your number either way, because a trap that is empty tonight may not be empty tomorrow.
Ask the county to check the ones you cannot reach.
If a trap sits on a property you have no way onto, your local animal control does. Give them the block, tell them a house cat may be inside, and ask for it to be checked today rather than on the next round.
